Le Carceri d'Invenzione
My Le Carceri d'Invenzione (Imaginary Prisons) series takes its name from a series of etchings done by Giovanni Battista Piranesi in the 18th century. Piranesi's prisons were overpowering, and frightening. For examples click here.
In my series of 24 drawings, which draw inspiration from Chinese window lattices, the prisons are atmospheric and beautiful. Sometimes the strongest prisons are those that are most beautiful, for beyond the confining grids lies the unknown.
